There’s an Abundance of Reasons for Ski Touring in Tromsø

The city of Tromsø has over 75,000 inhabitants, and is located directly by the sea, at a latitude of 69°N. On the neighbouring islands and in the outback there are hundreds of peaks that are perfect for ski touring. There’s nowhere quite like this part of northern Norway that offers such a variety and choice of tours. The great thing about a touring week in Tromsø is that you also have the opportunity to take in the city flair. The never-ending daylight here encourages after-tour activities, such as visiting cafés, museums, or even just mingling with the locals in the evening.

Throughout this week we will enjoy the comfort of our four-star hotel, Hotel Clarion The Edge. Located directly on the water, it is the epitome of a modern hotel, with many feel-good features. In a nutshell – this trip is for tour goers who want to get to know the vibrant Tromsø city and who appreciate the comforts of a hotel and good food. This area offers a variety of tours that differ in character, often with stunning views of the sea.

Itinerary

You will be met by your assigned mountain guide at Tromsø airport and then take a short drive to the hotel. You will have six days of ski touring ahead of you. The exact locations of each day will be planned by your guide based on conditions and weather. The travelling times to the starting points of the tours are generally around 30-40 minutes, but sometimes a longer journey to one of the other magnificent mountains is worthwhile.

Late afternoons can be used to take a stroll through the city and enjoy what it has to offer. Dinner will be eaten at one of the many amazing restaurants in the city. The return journey home commences on Saturday.

Our Hotel

The town of Tromsø is an ideal gateway for skitouring trips in the surrounding. It is the most northern and largest city on our planet. An alive pedestrian zone nearby the harbour with spektacular views to snowy peaks makes the place unique. The 4 star Hotel The Edge is situated right at the harbour and just 3 minutes within walking distance from the center. It is part of the Clarion chain and enjoys the reputation of beeing one of the top hotels in town. All rooms are very stylish and modern. The breakfast buffet leaves no wishes unfulfilled. The dinners we will take in one of Tromsø´s delicious restaurants.

Terrain

Within a radius of 30 km around Tromsø we find so many wonderful ski touring destinations that a whole winter would not be enough to get to know them all. On the offshore islands of Kvaloya and Rigvassoya we ski steeply down into the rugged fjord landscape. The terrain on the opposite east side is more mellow and also allows ski tours after heavy new snowfalls or in more critical avalanche situation. The Store Holendaren is almost a must in this week. On the exposed peak you have an unforgettable view into deeply cut fjords and even to the open sea. A ski down into Grotfjord will be definetely a run that stays in your mind.

Requirements and Skiing Equipment

Good physical fitness and endurance for ski touring ascents up to 1500 metres (approximately six hours)
Experience of ski touring and good command and control when climbing with skins. Ski touring equipment, including ski crampons, is required.
A good skiing technique in all types of terrain

Hotel and Outward Journey

You will fly to Tromsø airport via Oslo. We will meet at the airport.
During this week we will be staying at the beautiful and modern four-star hotel The Edge. It is in the city centre, directly by the sea and offers almost every imaginable convenience and comfort. Link to the homepage.

A realistic self-assessment and an appropriate fitness level is required to join our trips. In order to enjoy a long day of skiing and to reduce the risk of injury, it is important to get in shape and possess a good level of fitness.

In addition to travel cancellation insurance, comprehensive medical and accident insurance that cover the costs of search and rescue, as well as transport costs, are imperative. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you are insured before departure.
