13/04 – 20/04/2019: Skitouring in the Beiarndalen

Beiarn map

Price: 1890 EUR

+ flight from central Europe to Bodo and back starting from 550 EUR

Once again we did discover a new skitouring area in northern Norway: our friends Helga and Stein, who are the skippers of the boat we use in Spitsbergen, did open up a nice skitouring lodge near Bodo, in the valley of Beiarndalen. This region still is totally unknown, but offers amazing and wonderful alpine scenery. If you would like to to climbs unknown peaks in total solitude in the high north of Norway, this trip is the one to join.

Process of the trip

We will pick you up at the airport of Bodo after your arrival and will drive together to our cozy lodge in the Beiarndalen. The drive will take approx. 2 hours and on the way we will stop for some food shopping. The next days now are ours to explore the mighty peaks around our lodge. Depending on the snow and weather conditions we will decide if we will pick a skitouring goal on the west or eastside of the more than 30 km long Beiarndalen. The lodge is located at the end of the road and we even have the possibility to let us tow with a snowmobile, to avoid a long walk in. Most of the peaks reach an altitude of about 1600 meters and are covered with glaciers in the upper regions. After an amazing skitouring day we return back to our lodge, enjoy a well deserved beer at the open fire and will prepare a nice dinner together. Next Sunday we need to say goodbye to this skitouring heaven and drive back to Bodo airport, where we will fly back to our port of origin.

Best travel time

Over the past years, it has proven that the best time to go ski touring in northern Norway is between the end of March and mid-May. At this time of the year the snowpack, which can be quite fragile and delicate earlier in the season, usually is stable. We also enjoy the very long daylight…around the end of April it does not get dark anymore up here. Also, it is not unusual at this time of the year to find powder snow on the north slopes and spring corn snow on the southern slopes.

Our lodge

We will stay in the cozy Beiarn lodge at the end of the Beiarndalen. The lodge is situated idyllically at about 500 meters and is surrounded by some birch trees. The next town is Tolla, here we find a small shop and a few inhabitants. The lodge does not offer great luxury, but we will be accommodated in nice double rooms. Hot shower and toilets are available inside the house.

Travel preparations

Please note the following three points after your booking:

A good or very good physical shape =>

A realistic self-assessment and an appropriate fitness level is required to join our trips. In order to enjoy long ski days you need to get in shape and train prior to the trip. A good fitness also reduces the risk of injury.

Information about the destination, vaccinations, health =>

Please keep yourself updated about the current (political) situation and country specific particularities of your destination. You can do so by checking the website of the ministry of foreign affairs of your own country.

Travel insurance =>

Please note that there is a potential risk of injury on a ski trip. When travelling abroad several travel insurances are imperative. Besides a travel cancellation insurance we highly recommend a travel health insurance as well as a travel accident insurance. These insurances need to cover potential costs for search and rescue operations and costs for hospital stays etc. It is your own responsibility to make sure you are covered accordingly.

For all of our trips that include a flight, a travel accident and travel health insurance that cover potential costs for search and rescue operations and medical costs (for example hospital stays) is mandatory. The insurance will be queried in our online registration form and we kindly ask you to fill in that information.

Appropriate insurance companies you can find in the internet. Please also check your credit card, eventually the according insurances are included.
