Arnøya – the fifth largest island in Norway –  lies pleasantly away from the nowadays by ski toureres more visited areas around the Lyngen Fjord. Several times a day a ferry operates, primarily to ensure transports of freshly caught fish to the mainland. The area is sparsely populated and the largely treeless landscape is only visited by very few ski tourers. Mountains with heights of 700 to 1,100 meters are surrounded by coastal space and ocean. Almost everywhere you can mount your skins and start exceptional ski tours. Even in the late season, at the end of April and the beginning of May, you will find a very good snowcoverage and that allows to ski all the way back to the shore of the sea. Arnøya is a good choice for ski tourers who appreciate quietness and are happy with ascents of unknown, maybe not as high but therefore unspoiled, mountains.

Process of the trip

Pick up at the airport of Tromsø by your mountainguide. The drive to Arnøya takes about four hours including ferry transfer. The long day of arrival is followed by six days of skitouring, during which the mountain guide decides and plans the tour destinations at short notice, depending on the prevailing conditions. Sometimes you never leave the island until the last day of the tour, sometimes you use the ferry and get to other destinations on nearby islands. The former boarding school of Lauksletta has been converted into a nice and comfortable lodge. You can relax and enjoy the hospitality of a nice elderly couple and their daughter. Freshly scented waffles and coffee after the tour are mandatory. In the evening there are delicious meals with often fresh fish served. The return journey to Tromsø will take place on Friday. From our centrally located hotel all restaurants, pubs and restaurants are within walking distance. Mostly the nights are short before heading home on Saturdays.

Change on October 5th: we are staying in a cozy house near the Guesthouse Lauksletta. Our house offers 4 bedrooms, bathroom, a living room and kitchen. We are having breakfast in our house and we need to prepare it ourselves. For waffles, coffee and dinner we will go to the Guesthouse Lauksletta. Also we can use the sauna at the guesthouse.

Travel preparations

Please note the following three points after your booking:

A good or very good physical shape =>

A realistic self-assessment and an appropriate fitness level is required to join our trips. In order to enjoy long ski days you need to get in shape and train prior to the trip. A good fitness also reduces the risk of injury.

Information about the destination, vaccinations, health =>

Please keep yourself updated about the current (political) situation and country specific particularities of your destination. You can do so by checking the website of the ministry of foreign affairs of your own country.

Travel insurance =>

Please note that there is a potential risk of injury on a ski trip. When travelling abroad several travel insurances are imperative. Besides a travel cancellation insurance we highly recommend a travel health insurance as well as a travel accident insurance. These insurances need to cover potential costs for search and rescue operations and costs for hospital stays etc. It is your own responsibility to make sure you are covered accordingly.

For all of our trips that include a flight, a travel accident and travel health insurance that cover potential costs for search and rescue operations and medical costs (for example hospital stays) is mandatory. The insurance will be queried in our online registration form and we kindly ask you to fill in that information.

Appropriate insurance companies you can find in the internet.

Please also check your credit card, eventually the according insurances are included.
