Here you can see more photos of this trip

At the end of April, when springtime has arrived in central Europe already, 300 kilometers north of the Polar Circle at the highest mountains of Sweden winter still remains. The conditions are just inviting up there at this time of the year. Quietness and long days will make your stay just unforgettable. If you want to put down a highlight towards the end of you winter our Polar Heliski Camp will be the ideal opportunity.

Some good reasons why to Heliski with us in Sweden:

  • A Heliski area of more than 3.000 square kilometers
  • Easy access from central Europe
  • Perfect logistics with short travels from Kiruna to the lodge
  • Cosy lodge in spectacular setting
  • Very good price-performance ratio
  • Skiing in small and exclusive groups of max. 4 clients per guide and a maximum of 12 clients per week.
  • Incredible landscape and runs
  • Private helicopter located in front of the door

How a Heliskiweek / Heliboardweek in Sweden will run for you

On 24th of April we will fly from central Europe via Stockholm to the mining town of Kiruna. With minibuses we will reach the end of the road at Nikkaluokta within 1 hour. Now it is time to load our luggage on snowmobiles and trailers. A bumpy trail brings us in 45 minutes to our home for the next days, the Kebnekaise Fjällstation, quite in the middle of nowhere. Our helicopter is parked right in front of the lodge. At the open fireplace we enjoy a nice candle light dinner, while we make you acquainted with the program of your week. Next morning our pilot Mats will start up the helicopter, just a few minutes later we will reach the first mountain top. This is the moment where you can overview the large dimensions of our Heliski area for the first time. What counts now is just skiing in this vast and almost endless terrain. The next 6 days will be just yours to enjoy some great skiing in an area larger than 3000 square kilometers. A lot of the runs lead over long glaciers and mostly by the time the sun sets lower in the late afternoon, we ski back to the lodge via the spectacular run of “Jokulbakken”. Back at the lodge, coffee and freshly made pastries are waiting for you, while the sauna is already pre heated. On the following Monday right after skiing it is time for us to say good bye. By snowmobiles we head back to Nikkaluokta and then back to Kiruna, where we will spend the last night in Hotel Kebne. The next morning we fly back to our home destination.

The Heliski area

Kebnekaise_MapOur Heliski area for the Polar Heliski Camp is situated 300 kilometers north of the polar circle, at the highest peak of Sweden, the Kebnekaise at 2108 meters above sea level. Here we find runs in all kind of steepness as well as exposition. A lot of the runs lead over large glaciers and the best time to ski there is mid April until mid May. Sure Heliskiing has been done in that region long before, but most of the trips started 90 kilometers north in Riksgränsen. So the reachability was a bit limited by the long distances.

Our base

Fjällstation_KebneThe cosy Kebnekaise Fjällstation will be our home for the week. The station is very convenient and comfortable with a very good kitchen. A large breakfast will give us enough energy to get going for a big day. We will have packed lunch on board of the helicopter and it will be served around noon. In the evenings we enjoy a delicious dinner. If you want to relax a bit after a long ski day you can read a book in the reading lounge or use the sauna. Drinks can be bought at the Fjällstation, there is also a good selection of wine and beer. Here you can have a look at the Kebnekaise Fjällstation

Your Guide Team for the season 2019

Flory Kern

FloryFlory is UIAGM Mountain and Skiguide, he is the founder of the company “Ski Berge Abenteuer” that is been successfully running skiing and Heliski trips all over the world since 1998. Sure it can be said that Flory did a lot of pioneering work when it comes to Heliskiing, he was the first to take European clients to Kamchatka, to the Khamar Davan Mountains at Lake Baikal or to the remote Himalayan valley of Pahalgam, as well as to Svanetia, where he runs his Svanetia Heliski operations. Flory is always in search of new and interesting places to ski and to show his clients very unique destinations with some of the finest skiing.

Remo Baltermia

RemoGuideRemo is right from the heart of central Switzerland, from Engelberg. Funny enough, we are ski buddies since 30 years already. Remo is not only a very good skier and winter guide, he also works as a full time professional mountain guide in the summer and takes his clients through challenging alpine routes all over the Alps. Remo is also a good entertainer, when he pulls out an old guitar to play some great blues songs.

Christl Kohler

Christl Kohler lives in Klein Walsertal, right away he felt super comfortable in our guides team. He has proved his absolute professionality while guiding with us in unknown Heliski areas. We are happy to have him with us in Sweden in 2019.

Quality and safety

SicherheitQuality and safety is always our top priority. Although we always try to get the best experience for our guests, we never do this by compromising your safety. Any risks, which we have an influence on, we will keep under control. But as with any activity in high alpine regions, also with Heliskiing, there are risks that are beyond our control. You should be aware that you have to share these risks with us, skiing in remote places on our planet. At our Heliski destination in northern Sweden we are far away from any rescue service, therefore we have developed our own rescue strategy. Our groups consist of a max. number of 4 clients plus 1 guide. In our weeks we usually ski in 3 teams with the ratio 4 pax. plus 1 guide.  In case of an incident, with this strategy we always have at least 3 professional guides on spot. Other than that we always carry extensive first aid and rescue material with us as well as satellite telephones.

Runs and terrain

TerrainThe runs and terrain at the highest peaks of Sweden are dominated by high alpine and glacied mountains. We have the daily choice, depending on snow and conditions, where we ski and also what steepness and in which exposition we will ski. The maximum height is 2108 meters and the lowest we can ski to is 500 meters. Average of the runs is a vertical drop of around 800 meters.

Helicopter

LongrangerIn northern Sweden we use a Bell Longranger. This helicopter has very good skills in altitudes of the middle range. A very strong engine will make sure that we will reach landings in just a few flight minutes. This helicopter offers enough seats per flight for 4 clients plus 1 guide. We will place the helicopter directly in front of the Fjällstation.

Helicopter pilot

IMG_0537This trip we run together with our friend and very skilled helicopter pilot Mats Widgren. We know Mats for several years and he also flies with us in our other Heliski destinations and  in Svanetia as well. Over the last seasons he has proven his extraordinary flying skills more than once. Mats is from Northern Sweden and knows the area inside out, as he is flying in the mountains around Kebnekaise regularly.

Requirements

AnforderungenIn order to be able to enjoy a heliski adventure to the fullest, you should have a very good skiing technique in every terrain. Good physical condition and endurance for up to 10,000 vertical meters of skiing per day are required. Heliskiing in this region is reserved for the advanced freeride skiers and snowboarders. Flory Kern – Ski Berge Abenteuer – has the right to not allow participants to ski  if they hold up the group or show conditional weaknesses.

Material and Skis

Skiopening_2016_3Freeride skiing equipment (min. 95 mm under the binding) and safety equipment, consisting of shovel, probe, LVS device and an avalanche safety system backpacker are mandatory. It is recommended to wear a helmet. Due to the fact that we carry out this trip only once per season, we are not able to provide the equipment for you in Sweden. However, as an experienced freerider you should have all the mandatory equipment yourself. You will receive a detailed packing list from us about 30 days before the journey. Every participant is responsible that his gear is in reliable and good condition. Renting skis on spot will not be possible, although we always carry one extra pair of skis with us in case of a loss of a ski.

Weather and snow

Wetter und VerhaeltnisseSure we also like to ski in best powder, possibly most of the times. But to get good powder we also need regular dumps of fresh snow. Like in most places where Heliskiing is done, bad weather days can also be part of your trip. On average we find 2 – 3 days of snow fall within 7 days. Heliskiing highly depends on weather, snow and avalanche conditions. The situation on the mountain is characterized by forces of nature of which we mostly have no influence on. Therefore this sport is not always perfect and you should prepare for this accordingly. Heliskiing up here is skiing in high mountain regions which are not controllable. Nobody can say what will expect you during your week. It might be the most fulfilling skiing experience in your life, but it might also become a disappointment if the weather and snow conditions do not meet with your expectations.

Bad weatherdays / downdays

DowndaysLike in all other Heliski destinations on earth, at our Polar Heliski Camp there can be days with strong snowfalls and poor visibility, so that safe flying with a helicopter is not guaranteed anymore. Sure on those days our helicopter will stay on the ground. On those days it is wise to have skis and bindings with walking mode and skins with you. A visit at the Glacier research station of Tarfala is always worth to go or skin up to the home peak.

Vertical meters / helitime

HöhenmeterWe would like to provide you “a destination from riders for riders”. Therefore we developed our own philosophy when it comes to vertical meters or helicopter flying time. It is our target to offer you the best possible riding within our package. 14 hours of flying time are included per week with a number of 12 clients, flying in 3 rotations. This comes up to roughly 30.000 vertical skiing or riding meters. If we exceed the 14 hours per week, sure we can continue to ride at the price of 1800 Euro per flying hour. When it comes to extra flying time it will be divided by the number of clients riding. In our package we are able to guarantee 10 heli hours per week, that means if we fly less than 10 hours due to bad weather etc., the unused hours will be reimbursed with 160 Euro per hour each client. If you cannot use up all your flying time due to sickness or lack of condition, we are not able to reimburse you unfortunately.

Number of clients per week

TeilnehmerzahlWe are very proud to offer you great skiing in a spectacular landscape. We are not the type of company that is keen to run huge number of clients per week, for that our destinations are too unique and unspoiled. A maximum of 12 clients per week will keep our operation nice and small and make your stay more comfortable. We are sure you will appreciate this fact.

In our package of 6400 Euro the following is included

  • 6 overnights in the Kebnekaise Fjällstation with full board (rich breakfast, packed lunch and delicious dinner)
  • 1 overnight at Hotel Kebne in Kiruna with breakfast and dinner in a good restaurant in Kiruna

Travel preparations

You have booked a skitrip with us? In this case please take note of the following:

All of our trips are carefully planned and executed to our best knowledge and belief. We are trying to minimize all risks and dangers. However, the past years have shown that a good and accurate travel preparation from your side is the key to an unforgettable week. These preparations include:

A good or even better very good physical shape =>

Especially at heliskiing trips, but also at freeriding or skitouring you need to be in shape! Otherwise you can get exhausted too quickly and the risk of an injury increases substantially. This means regular training for you upfront your trip.

Information about the destination, vaccinations, health =>

If you travel with us to a foreign country you should keep yourself updated about the destination and the current (political) situation there. You can do so by checking the website of the ministry of foreign affairs of your own country. Here you can usually find all necessary information about the travel destination. Of course we will also send you all important information about the trip.

Travel insurance =>

When travelling abroad several travel insurances are imperative. Besides a travel cancellation insurance we highly recommend a travel health insurance as well as a travel accident insurance. These insurances need to cover potential costs for search and rescue operations and costs for hospital stays etc. Unfortunately from February 2018 on we are not able to include these kind of insurances in our packages. Further we are not able to book these insurances through Hanse Merkur anymore. For you this means it´s in your own hands from now on to make sure you are covered!

For all of our trips that include a flight, such as Japan or Georgia, a travel accident and travel health insurance that cover potential costs for search and rescue operations and medical costs (for example hospital stays) is mandatory. The insurance will be queried in our online registration form and we kindly ask you to fill in that information.

Appropriate insurance companies you can find in the internet. Please also check your credit card, eventually the according insurances are included.

How to sign up for the Polar Heliski Camp

In 2019 we are only able to sell a limited number of seats, therefore it will be necessary to sign up as early as possible, also in order to get the spot.
Please fill in the online sheet on our website carefully, press send and within the next few days we will send you your travel documents over. Please also take notice of our general terms and conditions.
