Ski Touring Along the Silk Road

The exact route of the historical Silk Road can no longer be clearly defined today. Yet somewhere here, south of the trading city of Samarkand, once ran the most important trade route connecting Europe and Asia. The impressive Pamir Alai mountain range, with its towering glaciated peaks, extends far into Uzbekistan and provides a spectacular backdrop for extraordinary ski touring.

This is where our Silk Road Ski Touring Experience begins. After arriving in Samarkand, we travel by 4x4 vehicle for around three hours to a remote mountain village situated at over 2,000 meters above sea level. We spend the first days of the trip in this authentic village of around 3,000 inhabitants. Everything feels like stepping back in time: small farmhouses, a simple lifestyle, and old Soviet-era vehicles still shape daily life here. After a hearty breakfast prepared by our friend and local host Nurik, we either start directly from the house or drive with his off-road vehicle toward the massive northern slopes until the snow-covered road becomes impassable. From there, skins go on and we head into the untouched mountains.

Itinerary

After three impressive ski touring days, the fourth day is dedicated to travel. The route takes us through breathtaking mountain scenery toward the border with Tajikistan. Here we say goodbye to Nurik. Crossing the border on foot, we are warmly welcomed by the Tajik border guards. On the other side, Amir, our Tajik driver, is already waiting for us. The journey continues southward, where deeply snow-covered peaks rising above 5,000 meters dominate the horizon. We spend the night in a simple guesthouse. Early the next morning, after about an hour’s drive, we reach a starting point at approximately 2,800 meters altitude. Depending on conditions, we ascend a summit exceeding 4,000 meters.

At this time of year, the northern slopes usually offer excellent powder snow.After another night in a guesthouse, one more untouched side valley and a magnificent peak await us. Following six demanding ski touring days, we spend the final two days in an area supported by ski lifts, where ascents are more relaxed and rarely exceed 800 vertical meters. After many unforgettable descents, summits, and experiences, we still have time to explore Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, with its lively markets and broad boulevards, before flying home via Istanbul the following day.

The Terrain

We spend almost the entire trip in high alpine terrain. Depending on snow and weather conditions, the ascents can be physically demanding. In addition, we will often be touring at elevations between 2,500 and 4,000 meters.

From late February to early March, the north-facing slopes generally offer excellent powder snow, while steep south-facing slopes may already provide perfect spring corn snow.

Accommodation

We stay in simple, family-run guesthouses and small hotels. Everything is clean, welcoming, and authentic. Rooms are basic but comfortable, while bathrooms are sometimes shared.

Meals are served directly at the guesthouses: a substantial breakfast, packed lunches for the day, and traditional regional dinners in the evening. One of the highlights is “Plov,” the famous Central Asian rice specialty.

Country and People

Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are still largely unknown ski destinations. This is mainly due to the vastness of the region and the limited infrastructure in the remote areas of the Pamir mountains.

What surprises most visitors is the incredible hospitality of the local people. Despite modest living conditions, everything is remarkably clean and well maintained. Litter is rarely seen, and even the simplest homes are cared for with pride. The people are open-minded, warm, and helpful. Their honesty and reliability are especially impressive. Many younger people speak very good English. Besides Russian, Farsi (Persian) is widely spoken. Although the majority of the population is Muslim, religion generally plays a rather moderate role in everyday life.
