An exciting ski trip into a hidden mountain village

When we think of Ukraine, we may automatically think of conflict, corruption and instability. But in the west of the Ukrainian Alps it’s almost hard to believe that this could exist anywhere here at all. Meters of snow can be found here waiting for us in the winter months. The mountains here offer an ideal ski area, with the highest peaks being around 2000m. The sparse forests here could almost be mistaken for those from a high mountain landscape. In the mountain town of Dragobrat there are around 50 small guesthouses and hotels. We are given access to the mountains by eight ski and chairlifts that are directly behind the small village. We can reach many interesting runs from the lift area. To increase our radius we also use a snowcat, which can help us to reach runs of 700m.

If you’re looking for an exotic skiing trip on the edge of the middle of Europe, then this is the trip for you. We’re thrilled to be able to offer this trip again for 2021.

We will fly to Lviv in the west of Ukraine. A four hour drive by minibus will take us to the village of Jassinja. This is where the adventure starts: we’ll load our luggage onto four-wheel trucks, which has cabins for passengers. There is no trace of a road for 15km. At the end of the journey, we will reach the small mountain town of Dragobrat at 1300m. We will then head to the hotel, where we can also enjoy some tasty Ukrainian culinary delights.

We will have the next six days ahead of us to make the most of the beautiful runs in the Ukrainian Alps. On Saturday we will drive back to Lviv and return back to central Europe in the afternoon.

Snow and Terrain

Due to a fortune geographical location, winter in the Ukrainian Alps starts often already in November. By mid winter 3 to 4 meters of snow are very common. The terrain is absolutely inviting for freeriding. Very large and rounded mountains are dominating the Ukrainian Alps. We have the choice when it comes to steepness and exposition: above 1600 meters the terrain is treeless while below we cruise through nicely gladed forests, that give visability even in flat light or snow fall.

On days using the snowcat to reach the surrounding mountains there is a strong and sturdy Kässborer snowcat for disposal. On its back there is a cabin that has 14 comfortable and heated seats. With the snowcat we have access to 30 square kilometers of untracked terrain. Depending a bit on distance and vertical meters one ride up takes between 20 and 45 minutes.

Our hotel

Our hotel is a ski in and ski out place, located right on the foot of the mountain. Most of the hotels in Dragobrat are of similar standard: the rooms are kept quite simple but clean and tidy. Each room has its own bathroom with shower. Like most of the accomodations in the east the hotel is almost overheated and opening a window helps to bring some cooler air into the room. The restaurant downstairs is very cosy and the food they serve very delicious and hearty. All kind of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages are serverd at very reasonable cost. The only thing we need to work on a little bit is good coffee for breakfast, but we are sure that we can solve this in future. Right in front of the building is an inviting fire heated hot tub and in the basement a nice russian banya helps to losen up tired muscles after a long day outside. The place is owned by a family and Vasily the landlord takes care about almost everything. The hotel Juliana is a real place to feel well.
