Kosovo - Free Mountain Week

We love to go to exotic regions to ski there. A few years ago we discovered the small town of Brezovica on an exploration trip in the Balkans and were immediately impressed by the charm and freeride possibilities of this ski area.

Trip Description

The small town of Brezovica is hidden in a valley of the Dinaric Alps. The development of modern ski tourism failed to materialize here. The lifts that were built in the past have a nostalgic effect, and it is with a smile that you use the three systems that are still working to get to the spectacular terrain on the mountain. Arriving at the mountain station, there is a one-hour ascent with skins to the highest point at over 2,600 m above sea level. The difference in altitude down into the valley is more than 1,000 meters. Between Macedonia in the south and Kosovo in the north you are in a place that impresses with great opportunities for freeriders.

On one day of the week we use a snow cat to get to the surrounding area without having to climb up. Optionally, further trips with the snowcat can be organized on site. We appreciate skiing in Brezovica, far away from well-known destinations. Long, good descents and also the snow quality in the last few winters have convinced us to come back and offer this trip again.

Itinerary

The journey starts with a flight from Zurich, Munich or Frankfurt to Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. Wizzair flies to Pristina from Basel and Memmingen. In just over an hour by minibus you can reach Brezovica, where we are located near the lifts. The descents are reached by using lifts, a powerful snow cat with cabin and own ascents with skins.

A total of six days are available in the beautiful mountain landscape of the Dinaric Alps to get to know the best runs. In Brezovica there are several bars and restaurants that offer a boisterous après-ski especially at the weekend. The return journey to Pristina begins on the following Friday after skiing. We spend the last night in this lively city.

The Most Important Details at a Glance

Requirements and Skiing Equipment

  • Safe skiing in open terrain and in any type of snow.
  • Strength and stamina for about 1.5 hours climbs on skins. Touring freeride equipment is required.
  • Openness and tolerance in the event of unforeseeable events, such as a power failure or difficulties in starting the lifts.

Hotel & Outward Journey

  • Arrival: There are direct flights to Pristina from many airports in Central Europe. We are happy to help you book your flight through our partner travel agency.
  • Hotel: Ski in, ski out - the Hotel Woodland, located directly at the lift, was partially renovated in summer 2017 and offers simple and clean accommodation. Unfortunately, people smoke in many places in Kosovo, which can sometimes lead to unpleasant smells (example: a smoking guest in the breakfast area). Regardless of the good commitment of the operators, you are subject to the local conditions and you should definitely be able to have your candlelight dinner in an emergency. In the evening we go to various small pubs - the selection of food is large and includes pizza and tasty local dishes. We spend the last night in a middle class city hotel in Pristina.

Weather & Conditions

Even if Kosovo is a little further south than the Alps, the temperatures in the winter months are similar to those of the Central Alps. Precipitation usually falls as snow down to low-lying areas from November. At higher altitudes between 1,600 and 2,600 meters, a snow cover with a thickness of three meters is not uncommon.
