Unfortunately his visit was not to come for a holiday. About 1 year ago he had a spine operation in russia that was only partly succesfull. After the operation his health situation got worse and worse. His life was dominated by constant pain and moving around was almost impossible for him. Not even to think about exert his work as a guide.
His operation was redone about 12 days ago in the well known clinic of Markgröningen. It all went well, his damaged disc was replaced by an artificial one and already now Fedia is on his way to get better every day.

This operation was payed out of private financial fundings as well as the clinic of Markgröningen has helped to keep the costs down. Therefore we and espeially Fedia would like to thank everybody that helped in finanicial ways as well as the doctor team dr. Schätz and dr. Richter and the company of Ortema from the clinic Markgröningen.
We all wish and hope to see Fedia back in the mountains of Kamchatka working in his sphere as a Mountian Guide.

In July 2010 we will travel the fouth time to this unique Heliski spot in the Central Tien Shan Mountains. Also after our third journey there in July 2009, we are still absolutely thrilled by the breath-taking freerski runs in this untouched mountain region, where the highest peaks lie above 7,000 metres above sea level.

If you are ready to do without the comfort and are looking for quiet and loneliness and combine this with great skiing, our trip to Kirgistan is absolutely the right thing for you.

Information on Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is one of the most western oriented ISTAN countries in Central Asia. With only 6 million inhabitants, the country is only very densely populated. This is not a surprise, given the fact that more than half of the country lies above 3,000 above sea level.
The capital is Bishkek. Here more than one million people of different origin live together: Kirgisians, Russians, Usbekis, Kasachans, Wolgagermans and some Chinese. Bishkek is known as the greenest city of the former UdSSR. Many of the gardens are fed by the Tien Shan. 200 km east of Bishkek the second largest mountain lake of the world is situated, the Issuk Kul Lake (Ozero Issyk Köl), which means “Warm Lake”. This lake, also known as the “Kirgisian Sea”, lies at about 2,000 metres above sea level. At the northern and southern ends of the lake the mountains of the Tschersky Alataus and the Tien Shan protrude more than 7,000 metres up into the sky.

Climate

The Tien Shan Mountains lie at about 46 degree northern amplitude. The winters are cold and low on rain or snow fall. But in April or May usually heavy rain fall starts, which, at heights above 3,000 metres, usually comes down as snow. In the mountain valley, however, early summer starts at about the end of June with very agreable temperatures.

Weather and conditions

The best conditions in order to go skiing in the Tien Shan, prevail in the months of June and July. Due to the climatic conditions there will be snow fall almost every afternoon. Normally we will start very early in the morning, at about 6.30 am, and will be back from the skiing at about 1 pm. Last season we found beautiful firn snow, partly covered in fresh snow. However, we will be skiing one of the highest mountain ranges of the world and nobody can predict how the wheather and snow conditions will be.

Special requirements for the journey

You will need to be very fit in order to be able to ski at heights of about 5,000 metres above sea level. We recommend every participant to have a heart and endurance test done by a specialist.

Helicopter

For the heliskiing we usually use a maschine from the Kirgisian military, type MI8 MTV. The maschine is about 5 years old and is thoroughly serviced after every flight. The team of pilots, is very familiar with flights in such heights. Our head pilot, Shirimbek has been a rescue pilot in the Tien Shan for centuries. The helicopter is based directly besides our accommodation in the mountaineer camp Maida Adyr.

Safety

To make your trip as safe as possible is our first priority. However, any activity in alpine terrain is afflicted with some risks, even if applying a maximum of safety precautions. Therefore, one thing should not be forgotten with all our journeys and acitivties, especially the heliski journeys: There are things and conditions that we have absolute control over but there are also others that we can’t predict or control. We would like to stress that there are unpredictable risks that we cannot control but which you will have to share with us!

Important information on the journey

During our heliski trip to Kyrgyzstan skiing will be our main activity. Anyway, besides this we would also like to get to know the country and the people there and enjoy the looks at one of the highest mountain ranges of the world. Our runs go on for usually between 600 and 1.100 vertical metres through absolutely stunning landscapes. Every participant should be aware of the fact that it is not the goal of this trip to do as many vertical metres as possible but rather to fully enjoy the skiing in this remote mountain region.

Accommodation

During our heliski days we are based in the village of Maida Adyr in the mountaineer camp. The camp lies picturesquely on a green pasture at 2,600 metres above sea level in the high valley of the Inichek river. We are accommodated in double rooms, which are very clean but only very basically furnished. We usually eat in the kitchen of the camp. The meals are very tasty, usually with salads, fresh fruit and Kirgisian specialities.

Our service package includes

9 overnights in the mountaineer camp and in hotels in Karakol, Yurt Camp and Bishkek

full-board in the mountaineer camp and half-board in the hotels

9 days mountain and travel guiding by one UIAGM mountain guide, one local guide and one second guide

12 heli hours, therefrom 2 hours flight from Bishkek to Maida Adyr, app. 16,000 vertical metres

border permit

flight permit

national park fees

all transfers in Kirgistan, return with a special-purpose vehicle Maida Adyr, Karakol, Bishkek

trekking tour from Karakol to a beautiful mountain lake

travel cancellation insurance

insolvency coverage

Extra costs

flight Europe to Bishkek (app. 650 Euro)

visa at the arrival at Bishkek (app. 50 Euro)

lunch on the days in Karakol, Cholpon Ata and Bishkek

extra heli hours: app. 2,400 Euro per hour divided by the participants (about 12 people)

Why not go to Germany for a change? It doesn’t always have to be some exotic country in order to get a few days of good skiing. Our mountain guide Felix has planned an early spring tour for you. Let him guide you through Kleinwalsertal at Fellhorn and Kanzelwand.

Our plan: ascent with “Walmendingerhornbahn” up to 1,940m. After a short warm-up ride, we will take a north-facing run for about 700 vertical metres down into Schwarzwasser Valley. About 20 minutes of pushing will get us to the valley station of “Ifenbahn” which will take us to 2,000m again. Now we will have to climb for about an hour up to the Ifen Plateau. From there we have two options: Firstly, riding through a gap of a about degree south-facing back into Schwarzwasser Valley (fantastic run of about 880 vertical metres) or, secondly, abseiling down a 30m high vertical drop into the same run. A breathtaking option, more of a great skiing experience is hardly possible. If there is enough time, we will take the bus back to Kanzelwandbahn und ascend up to 1,968m. From there a west-facing run in the evening sun is waiting for us. On the program for the second day we will decide on spot depending on our condition and the wheather.

Requirements

skitouring experience

secure and speedy skiing in all snow conditions

experience in handling a rope

The service package of 330 EUR includes

2 days guiding by state-approved mountain and skiing guide

2 overnights with half-board in a mid-class hotel

safety equipment (LVS device, shovel and probe) on loan (needs to be registered at least 10 days before the journey)

ski and shoe depot at the lift station

travel cancellation insurance

insolvency coverage

Extra costs

travel costs

lunch and drinks

lift pass

Anreise

Via Oberstdorf into “Kleinwalsertal”. In Westegg turn right into “Jägerwinkel”, after about 500 m right again. We will meet in Gasthof Sonnenburg on 25th of April at about 7 pm.

We are pleased that you are interested in our heliski journeys or have already booked a journey with us.
When we took our first guests to Kamchatka for a heliski adventure nine years ago, we were the pioneers. Today we are, as the only company concentrating on this destination for such a long time, the specialists for this region. No heliski destination of the world has such a lot of adventure and unique experiences to offer. And no one knows this region better than we do. We work with some of the best pilots, very reliable helicopters, and together with a team of outstanding mountain guides from Europe and Kamchatka we build a well-rehearsed team. In this mountain area of about 35,000 square metres we have explored more than 230 runs, which partly carry our names. These are breathtaking rides in absolutely fascinating landscape. Sometimes they lead us past snarling and breewing vulcanoes down to the ice-clad coast of the Bering Sea, sometimes more than 2,000 vertical metres in one go. Whoever is looking for powder, adventure and a unique experience, will be absolutely right with us on Kamchatka!

Information on the country

Kamchatka, the mysterious peninsula in the very far north-east of Russia:

• set between the Bering Sea in the east and the Okhosian Sea in the west
• 8 ½ flight hours away from Moscow
• 350.000 people live on Kamchatka.
• The highest peaks are 4,800 metres above sea level.
• The winter months last from October to May and snow depths of up to 10 metres do not disturb the locals much.

Our basis

Our basis is in Elizovo. 30.000 people live here. Elizovo is a suburb of Petropavlovsk, the capital of Kamchatka, which is only about 18 km away. Elizovo is very lively and most of the inhabitants earn their money with fishing. A colourful market and many small shops with westernly articles can be found in the centre. Directly behind the town one of the many mountain ranges start; here can also be found the alpine skiing centre Marosnaja with two lifts. From Marosnaja one can get a beautiful view over the vulcanoes in the north with the more than 3,000 metre high peaks of Korejaksky and Awatschinsky and to the south the volcanoes Viluchinsky und Mutnovsky.
European guests in Elizovo are still „exotic“. But in the meantime we are well-known with the locals and very often they let us take part in their culture and every day life, which is always hidden to “normal” tourists.

Mountain guides

The following professionals will look after your safe heliski adventure 2010:

Flory Kern

State-approved mountain and skiing guide, founder and head of Ski Berge Abenteuer.
Flory had been to Kamchatka about 10 years ago and has been exploring these wild mountains for heliskiing ever since. He knows the mountains and volcanoes of Kamchatka like noone else and you can always rely on his great intuition in finding the best runs.

Wolfi Schmid

With his calm and predominant manner Wolfi has been working as a professional mountain guide for many years. Perfect freeride skiing technique as well as a great ”nose” for the best snow in alpine regions characterize Wolfi. He was one of the first mountain guides taking part in heliskiing on Kamchatka and with his outstanding knowledge of the region will guide you safely through the mountains of Kamchatka.

Bernd Adler

Bernd has been working as a professional mountain guide in summer as well as in winter for more than 10 years now. Predominant leadership quality, an easy-going manner and great experience in alpine regions make him a complete mountain guide. As a professional mountain rescuer he is always there if there is an emergency in the mountains. Not only during our heliski journeys can we fully rely on him.

Fedor Farberov

Fedor, or Fedia, as we call him, knows the mountains of Kamchatka like nobody else. He is with us for all heliski operations on Kamchatka. His vast mountain guide experience together with his mountain guide and rescue formation in Canada make Fedia a brilliant mountain guide.

Helicopters and pilots

For the heliskiing on Kamchatka we usually use helicopters type MI-8, one the most-built flight objects of the world. On spot we work with the only company who can look back on a year-long experience and for over 15 years now disposes of an operating authorisation by the state. Every machine is thoroughly checked after every operation and wear parts are exchanged on a regular basis.

Normally Alexander „Sascha“ Astroitin steers our helicopter. Sascha is one of the best and most experienced helicopter pilots in Russia and looks back on an active flight experience of almost 35 years by now. He handles the MI-8 helicopter like nobody else and very often makes possible landings in areas, which are otherwise very hard to access.

Safety

Safety is always our top priority. Although we always try to get the best experience for our guests, we never do this by compromising your safety. Any risks, which we have an influence on, we will keep under control. But as with any activity in alpine regions, also with heliskiing there are some risks, which we have no influence on. You should be aware, that you will have to share these risks with us, if you go exploring the mountains of the world with us.

In all our heliski destinations we are far away from rescue services. Therefore, we have conceived our own safety strategy. We divide the participants into groups, which usually consist of 6 – 8 persons. Each group will be lead by a UIAGM mountain guide. Another safety guide will accompany the groups in the end. This well-rehearsed safety strategy gives our guests more freedom in the runs. Also we can be sure to have always enough professionals on spot. Furthermore we always carry extensive First Aid and rescuing material with us and also dispose of the professional knowledge of how to use it.

Requirements

In order to be able to enjoy a heliski adventure in Kamchatka to the full, you should dispose of a sound skiing technique in every terrain. Also a good physical condition and endurance for up to 10,000 vertical metres per day are required. Heliskiing in Kamchatka is reserved to the advanced freeride skiers, not least because of the very long runs. Flory Kern – Ski Berge Abenteuer – hast he right to not take participants on tour or leave behind in the helicopter, if they delay the group or show conditional weaknesses.

Material

Freeride skiing equipment (min. 85 mm under the binding) and safety equipment, consisting of shovel, probe and LVS device are compulsory. The safety equipment can also be hired from us free of cost. An avalanche airbag backpack can be used, but is not necessary. It is recommended to wear a helmet. You will receive a detailed packing list from us about 30 days before the journey. Every participant is responsible for his own material. It is not possible to buy or hire any spare equipment on spot.

Wheather and conditions

In order to find the best snow, we are constantly looking for regions with high rainfall quotas; with a yearly average of 2,800 mm per square meter, Kamchatka is in of these regions which get a lot of rain and snow fall.

Heliskiing is highly dependent on weather, snow and avalanche conditions. The situation on the mountain is characterized by forces of nature, on which we mostly have no influence. Therefore, this sport is not always perfect and you should prepare for this accordingly. Heliskiing in Russia is skiing in high mountain regions which are not controllable. Nobody can say what will expect you during your week on Kamchatka. It might be the most fulfilling skiing experience in your life, but it might also become a disappointment if the weather and snow conditions are not good. Our experience shows us that we get about 5 days of heliskiing out of 8 days on spot on average.

Moving about on spot

For all activities which are part of the program, we have a travel coach at our exclusive disposal. Night trips into the city of Petropavlovsk can be easily made by taxi.

Our daily heliski program

Choosing the best heliski spot for the day is mainly determined by wheather, wind and snow conditions. These three factors, together with our experience on spot, have lead to a very good yield of great runs. When the conditions are good, we start at the hotel at 9 in the morning, at 9:15 we start by helicopter to the chosen area.
Now we have the whole day to explore the almost unlimited widths of the Kamchatka mountains. When, in the afternoon, we get a little weary, we will look for a windstill landing place and enjoy local specialities like salmon sandwiches and kaviar. After that we will start again with full power until the mountains cast long shadows over the vast areas around the mountains of Kamchatka. On the flight back to Elizovo we will often land at one of the hot springs and will reflect on the experiences of the day while taking an agreeable bath.
Even though we know the mountains of Kamchatka like the back of our hand, unfortunately we cannot make the sun shine every day. But we will try to adapt our daily program accordingly. If the wheather is better in an area further away from Elizovo we are always prepared to take the helicopter and the team of pilots on a trip lasting several days to a region with better wheather. When starting such activities you can largely profit from our wide knowledge of the area.

Bad wheather program

„Even in paradise not every day is a perfect day…“ Even on non-flying days there is a lot to explore in Kamchatka. Petropthe local ski resorts can be a day full of fun. There are runs of up to 400 vertical metres through lush forests down to the sea. For those who want to relax a little bit more, there are many hot springs in the valley of Vilutschinsky about 40 minutes drive from the hotel. A day in the city with a visit to the market and to the museum can be very interesting, too.

Hotel

Our hotel, the „Hotel Art“, is a small and cosy private hotel, only 5 minutes away from the heliport. During our heliski season, we are usually the only guests. It is situated very centrally in Elizovo. Within 5 walking minutes one can get to the market, many shops and cafes. Apart from a comfortable bar we can also use the lounge with an open fire as well as a sauna. All rooms are equipped with bathroom and TV. From the hotel you can make phone calls to Europe without any problems, also an internet flat can normally be used 24 hours a day. It is recommendable to bring a laptop.

Vertical metres / heli time

We do not count our skiing in vertical metres, but in actual helitime, i.e. it counts only when the turbines are running. Because of this we are not bound to stay as close as possible to our base, as is the case with most other heliski operators, but we can also explore more remote areas and terrains. This way we can also respond much better to the wishes of our guests. Our motto: “Quality is better than quantity!“

Our service package comprises 8 helicopter hours. With these 8 hours we usually get about 30,000 vertical metres. If these hours are used up and the weather is good, we can fly on at a price of, assumed we have 12 participants, about 290 EUR per person and heli hour. If there are less participants, the price per heli hour will rise accordingly.

If for weather reasons we cannot use up all 8 heli hours we will recompense every full hour, which we did not use up, with 270 EUR per hour. The reason for the price difference is the fact that the helicopter needs to be provided in any case. With this procedure we have found a very fair rule, which saves everyone involved unnecessary trouble.

Insurance

Our service package comprises a 5-star insurance package of Hanse Merkur insurance. This package consists of a travel cancellation insurance, a travel health insurance, an emergency insurance, a travel accident insurance, and a luggage insurance. With this package and the special direct help insurance which we have effected for you in Russia, you are well secured. You will get your certificate of insurance and the insurance conditions together with your travelling documents.

Prices and costs in Russia

Lately the prices in Kamchatka have more and more adjusted to European standards and in some cases even exceed these. Unfortunately we as a tour operator can do nothing against this unpleasant development. Therefore, we need to reserve ourselves the right to, after a period of at least 4 months after effecting the travel contract, but not less than 21 days before the journey, increase the travel price, if there has been an unforeseen increase of travel costs, especially the fuel costs. Of course we will increase the price only as much as the cost – divided by the number of participants – has increased. In this context please also note paragraph 5 of our travel conditions.

Number of participants

Normally the number of participants is restricted to 14 people (without contractual warranty). For all our heliski journeys there is minimum number of participants of 12, which need to be achieved 8 weeks before the journey at the latest. In this context please also note paragraph 9 of our travel conditions.

Getting to Kamchatka

When flying to Kamchatka from Europe you always need first of all to go to Moscow. From here it is then another 8 flying hours to Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky. The number of airlines flying to Kamchatka is very limited. We work together with different travel agencies all over Europe who will be able to book the best flight for you.

Important note regarding the flights

Because of the exposed location of Kamchatka, especially during the winter months heavy storms and snow fall can occur. If this happens, flights can be delayed up to two days. Also changes of flight times and schedules, on which we have no influence, do regularly occur at short notice. In this case we do have to change the travel dates up to two days back or forth also at short notice. Therefore, you should in any case be flexible at least two days before and after the journey and not schedule any important meetings directly before or after the journey.

Flights and visa

It is best to book your flight with one of our partnering travel agencies. Here you will get competent advice and in case of changes of the flight schedule, you will be informed directly and automatically booked on another flight together with the rest of the group.
Also we work together with different visa agencies in several countries in order to get your visa for you. Together with your travelling documents you will get a visa information sheet, on which we have outlined how to obtain a visa and what to do. Depending on your nationality there are considerable differences.

Service package

• dinner, if we eat in the hotel (3 evenings)
We will pass one skiing day in one of the neighbouring skiing areas of Les 2 Alpes or Alp d’Huez.

In March 2011 for the first time we will make a heliski adventure trip to the remote Gold river of Tulsequah in northern Canada. To reach this remote place we will fly along the Tulsequah river, where we see endless ski terrain in all directions. Far away from anything we will share an unforgettable week, with only a bunch of wolves and moose, that live in this remote area.

Information about the Region

The Tulsequah River starts about 10 Km up the river of our base, not far from the huge Tulsequah Glacier. With its length of 35 Km and width of more than 2 Km. Juneau the capital of Alaska is only 45 Km down the Tulsequah river mouth. The base for our week will be the 1957 abonded Goldmine right at the river. Our Partner George Robbi and Bill Karman discovered this area in 2002. The dream of heliskiing this remote area began. In 2009 George and Bill had the chance to buy a Goldmine lodge little further up the river with this a perfect base was created and heliskiing in this incredible region is guaranteed for coming years. In this incredible wilderness we are far away from any civilization, therefore we find almost endless skiing terrain of its best. Sure with this week th skiing has the priority. Apre Ski will happen, but only within our skiing group wich can be lots of fun also. In winter 2010 the place was filmlocatiion for some spectacular Red Bull and Swatch Filmshoots. All the skiing terrain is in the coastal mountains with its highest peak ” Devils Pwa”. 2590 meters. The skiable area is more than 3500 squarekilometers. Noone else will ski here apart from you.

Climate

The snow starts falling beginning of November. The temperatures in the wintermonths are between -5 C and - 30 C. Frequent snowfalls due to it closeness to the ocean are guaranteed.

Special requirements for this Trip

Since we will be far away from any city and civilisation there will be no nightlife or other entertainment, apart from some of the gretes skiing on earth. Be aware that the only people you will meet on this trip will be your group and your guides and some staff of the lodge. Make sure you are in good health condition and be physikly prepared for the daily skiing.

Helicopter and Transferplane

Directly at the international airport of Juneau we will be picked up by a Beaver de Havilland plane that can board 6 passengers. In 40 minutes we will reach the airstip at Tulsequah. As the plane doesn´t have a lot of space, please make sure your luggage doesn´t exceed 20 Kg. Right at the lodge there is also the parking place for helicopter. Usually we use a Eurocopter AS 350 B1 or a B2. this helicopter is one of the most used for heliskiing. In summer the helicopters are based in Atlin Canada where all the maintenance will take place as well. The pilot Bill Karmann has more than 17.000 hours of flying time and is a very experienced Heliski pilote for more than 18 years.

Material

It is not necessary to bring your own skis. We will provide Powderskis Fischer Prophete 106 or Kneissl Tanker 96. There will be not enough space in the Beaver plane to load skis of everybody.

Safety

Safety is always our first priority. Although we always try to get the best experience for you, we never do this by compromising your safety. Any risk, that we have an influence on, we will keep under control. However with any activity in alpine regions, also with heliskiing there we have to share some risks that are beyond our control. Before the week we will have a safety briefing about the use of LVS devices, loading and unloading a helicopter while it is running. LVS device, shovel probe and ABS will be provided at the lodge.

Accommodation

This week we will spend in a nice lodge in a spectacular setting. Everything will be very comfortable for you but don´t expect a 5 Star lodge in this remote area. Most of the rooms are singles, a cook and some staff are based at the lodge for the season. There are 3 showers and bathrooms, each for 4 persons. Phone calls are only possible via satellite phone. Internet is available although limited and no larger downloads are possible since it is also run via satellite.

Our service package includes

Transfer flight Juneau - Tulsequah Lodge

7 Overnights with all meals

6 days of guiding by Flory and George

14 hours of helicopter time

5 Star insurance package, consisting of travel cancellation insurance, travel health insurance, emergency insurance, luggage insurance

insolvency coverage

Extra costs

Flight to Juneau from Europe or elsewhere

exceeding helicopter time at about 2000 EUR/ hour

Drinks

Flight to Juneau

We offer to organize the flight for you through our travel agent Neuner Reisen in Kempten, if you wish to get an offer for your flight please let us know and we will forward it to Neuner Reisen and they will make you an offer.

Price: 980 EUR

All around Passo Tonale we will find perfect terrain for Freeriding in an extra class. Amongst Italians Passo Tonale is well known as a family ski area. But not so the northern sides of the Pass. The name of the cable car tells already its own story, Funivia Passo Paradiso. At the end of the cable car a chair and a draglift takes us up to the 3000 Meter high Presena Glacier. From here we have the choice to ski down the northern sided slopes to Val Presena or climb up for 40 minutes and reach the glacier of Buzzata and ski down to the Ponte Alpini more than 1700 vertical meters. If you like steep couloirs at Punta de Castellagio you will find perfect once. Also from Passo Diavolo there is an incredible chute of 800 verticales down to passo Tonale. Also the more easy looking side of Passo Tonale has incredible potential for great freerides. On stormy days we usually ski in the area directly above the charmy town of Ponte di Legno. If you want to experience a very unique Freeride Area the circut around passo Tonale is the ideal.
